Nanotechnology

Yes I know that it is science on the smallest scale and I know that it is heralding in a brave new world and I even know that it is very controversial and represents a lot of unknowns in a similar realm to GM, so I suppose these were all the reasons I was 'in' on the proposed Dept of Innovation Industry Science Research video to reach out and explain Nanotechnology to the general public.
How do you film something that even an optical microscope cannot see?
The star of our show is invisible to the naked eye, in fact no one has ever seen one.

"Where art thou my Nanoparticle?"

There are only artist representations or electronic projections available (though some of these are amazingly beautiful)
This is a real quandry but I can flip it on its head and make it a real opportunity.
I am working with a completely new team Francesca (from LaTrobe University) and Adrienne (Science Journalist) and this has been refreshing on the whole but has also represented some major frustrations.
What I wanted to share was a little bit of the research that I have doing on the visual front. Animations are the lynch pin of this subject and the animation needs to reflect the state of the art. ie Nanotechnology is the latest and greatest of the scientific world and thus the animations should also be.
Check out these guys, a cool collaborative project of animation and sound. I think they are just it and a bit but I'm hoping this is just a start?

http://www.vimeo.com/25186640 (this is the whole project)

and here is a small but most amazing component by Heerko Groefsema

Heerko says of the project
"This is my entry for the project. It follows an abstract form's life span. After it is being born, we can see it evolve into different states. It being influenced by external factors and repelling this. After which the final transition will take place.

For the audio I have collaborated with the talented Ben Lukas Boysen of Hecq.

The piece has been premiered at the OFFF 2011 festival in Barcelona and is also featured on Stash 81 as the Bonus Film. The film will also be played at Sonar, Pause Fest, Playground festival and Cutout fest."
